Students, faculty, and staff are invited to gather from 4:00-4:45 pm on Friday, November 19th to point to or seek light as we close our Fall term. Together in the GoldGarden we will release the hopes, cares, and prayers that have been shared, through our Brighter Together Community Practices, to the universe through ritual burning. The Goldgarden is the outdoor space located east of the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life.
You may be aware that, as of Spring Term last year, our beloved green house officially changed its name from “Sabin House” to “the Esch Hurvis Center for Spiritual and Religious Life” in recognition of a gift from alumni, Tom Hurvis.
We realize our new name is a mouthful, and we are also aware that “Sabin House” is still floating around out there despite the new “Sabin House” location on Park Avenue near the Conservatory. So…. we want your help in the creation of a new shorthand name for this special place that Lawrentians have come to know and love. This is your opportunity to put your personal mark on a physical place in Lawrence’s history. What will be the newest addition to the Lawrence Lexicon be?!

If you have lost a loved one this year, you are invited to join others at the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life on Monday, November 1nd at 5 pm.
The end of October is a traditional time in several cultures and communities to honor our grief and acknowledge the reality of death in our lives. In this year of too many losses, the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life is partnering with Alianza and the Intro to Ethnic Studies class to observe Dia de los Muertos and to provide a place for our community to honor our grief together. Please also feel free to add a photo or memory item to the Altar that is located in the Diversity and Intercultural Center
The Center for Spiritual and Religious Life invites you to join us in three spiritual practices that will help our community be Brighter Together.
In the Conservatory lower level, you will find a table set up with materials to help students, staff, and faculty cultivate gratitude, prayer, and reflection through writing thank you cards, adding to a prayer wall, and journaling in a complimentary journal for you to take with you. This station will be available until Friday, November 5th and will then shift to the Warch Campus Center for the remainder of the term.
If you, your club, your department, or team are interested in hosting a display in your space, please email spiritual.religious.life@lawrence.edu and we will happily send you a kit that includes all supplies.
In the last week of the term, we will host a prayer wall burning ceremony. More details in the coming weeks.
Faculty and Staff are invited to gather for Fourth Friday Lunch this Friday, October 22nd from 12-1 in the Goldgarden. The Goldgarden is the grass to the east of the Esch Hurvis Center for Spiritual and Religious Life. Named for Professor Goldgar formerly of the English Department.
Soup, salad, and thoughtful conversation will be provided.

Find some quiet and relaxation on Monday nights this term during Fiber Arts & Crafts Night. Knit, crochet, weave, or bring your own crafts to the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life from 6-8 pm. Stephen McCardell’s life, music, and mentorship lives on even after his death in July of 2020. The Lawrence community invites you a musical celebration of his life and work on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 11:00 am.
The celebration will take place in Memorial Chapel with members of the Lawrence community invited to be part of the in-person celebration. As this term and this remarkable academic year come to a close, what better time to let go of what’s been holding you back, to dream for what you hope will come to fruition, and to share gratitude for the ability to transition and share in the collective loss and growth.
The prayer wall in the Library and in the Esch Hurvis Center for Spiritual and Religious Life will be picked up on Friday, June 4.
The ceremony will start at the library and move to the Esch Hurvis Center for Spiritual and Religious Life where the prayers will be burned. Meet at the Library where the bricks of the prayer wall are located.
