Honoring President Burstein

The entire Lawrence University community is invited to celebrate President Mark Burstein on Saturday, May 15, from 2-5 p.m on the Main Hall Green

The day will start with the LU community cheering on Mark as he makes his LAST LAP around campus. The lap will end at the library plaza and be followed by good food and music. Social distancing protocols will be observed during the parade, food, and music event!

Those who cannot physically make it to the event, do have an option to purchase a cardboard cutout of yourself place along the route.

More information on the event can be found on the LUCC Facebook page.

The Lawrentian and LUCC are also looking to reprise the Ariel yearbook for a special 2013-2021 edition to celebrate President Burstein’s time on campus. We are seeking photos from the LU community for this unique gift.  f you have photos to contribute, please share them by emailing them to Lawrentian@lawrence.edu and LUCC@lawrence.edu.

Remember to sign up for this training taking place tomorrow, May 7, 11 AM to 2 PM CT with facilitators from the Perception Institute.

The Perception Institute works to support institutions in their efforts to advance equity and belonging and to understand how identity differences can lead to “othering.” They use a foundational “brick” that helps provide understanding on how belonging is practiced:

BBelonging. The feeling of being valued and seen.
RRespect. Being treated as an equal with perspectives and contributions
recognized.
I  – Investment. The contribution of funds through an equity lens.
CConversation. The ability to engage in communication around identity

Holi Celebration – May 8th

Food, fun, and colors of all sorts make for a great celebration.

It’s the final stretch of a most bizarre academic year. Why not celebrate? Holi is a holiday celebrated to honor life and to celebrate the triumphs of good over evil. Since midwestern climates are less conducive to this celebration at it’s usual time, we’ve postponed it until it could be celebrated properly. (No, really…it was our pleasure.)

Get over to Ormsby Lake and experience for yourself the joy of Holi, the joy of colorful collegial celebratory feelings. The basking in vibrant powder and tinted water. Mark it on your calendar. Bring a friend. Schedule your study time around it. Bring your camera (but make sure you’re waterproofing it). You probably need this more than you think. Trust us.

Please join the Office of Communications and Web Development Team for a preview of and update on the www.lawrence.edu website redesign project.  In fall 2019, we began work on a full redesign of the main Lawrence University website, including overall navigation, site organization, and content review and development, to compete digitally with other schools, better represent the on-campus educational experience, and meet the needs of the internal community. The goals of the new website are to:

  • Encourage prospective students to apply and enroll.
  • Encourage alumni, parents, and friends to support Lawrence.
  • Make daily operations for faculty, staff and current students easier.
  • Inform community about operations and events.
  • Inform and delight prospective employees.

Please join us via Zoom on Tuesday, April 27, at 2:00 p.m. to learn about the project’s progress to date, see a preview of the new design, and learn
about next steps as we prepare for a launch of the new website in January 2022.

Employee Mindfulness Workshop

There is so much coming at us right now: many of us spend our days sitting in front of computers as talking heads on Zoom, which means that much of what we’re taking in is being held in our bodies as tension. With fewer opportunities to move our bodies, congregate, and do other things that release stress and make us feel vital, the tension can become chronic and lead to poorer mental health outcomes. However, when we tune into our felt sense and learn to relax and come home to our bodies, we can begin to process and move through the many difficult emotions and even trauma we’ve otherwise been unable to process through intellect alone.

Staff Connections is excited to partner with Wellness Services to hold an Employee Mindfulness Workshop! Sara Curtis and Corynn Stoltenberg will offer ways for staff and faculty to release tension, nurture themselves, and return to the wisdom of the body through simple guided exercises and open discussion.

This event will take place Tuesday, March 16, 11:30-12:00 p.m. via Zoom. The Zoom link may be found on the Staff Connections Upcoming Events page. The workshop will be recorded and posted on the Past Meetings page for those unable to attend and those who wish to revisit the exercises.

We hope to see you there!
