Judicial Board Recruitment

Dear Lawrentians,

Judicial Board is seeking nominations to join the Board for the 2020-2021 year.  J Board is looking to fill over half of the Board, so we are REALLY seeking nominations.

The goal of the University’s disciplinary system is to encourage and assist the students in assuming the responsibility for their own behaviors and discipline. The purpose of the Judicial Board is to educate rather than punish, to be helpful rather than vindictive, and to stimulate students to think about their actions as they relate to those of the other members of the university community.

The Board is committed to having a diverse board that represents the student body here at Lawrence, so we ask you to consider that commitment as you make your nominations.

Any rising sophomore, junior, senior, or 5th year may be nominated. Multiple nominations are welcome.  To nominate a student for the Judicial Board, please email their name to deanofstudents@lawrence.edu by Thursday, May 7th.

Thanks so much,

Cynfor Lu

Chair, Judicial Board

Lawrence makes residence hall available to city in COVID-19 fight

Lawrence University is donating the use of Trever Hall to the City of Appleton for the next four months to help in the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Trever is being made available to the city from now until the end of August. It will not be used as a medical facility and will not house COVID-19 patients, but rather will be a space the city can utilize for its personnel as needed.

“All of us are in this fight together,” said Christyn Abaray, assistant to the Lawrence president.

“Providing Trever Hall to our city is a natural step we at Lawrence could take to support our community in this effort.”

No Lawrence students or staff will be in the building. The university has cleaned and prepped the hall and made key-access available to city personnel. The city will provide its own bedding and will be responsible for the ongoing cleaning of the facility. City personnel staying in the hall will have access to the kitchen and laundry facilities, and free wi-fi is being provided.

Trever is well removed from where students on campus during spring term are being housed.

“We purposefully chose a residence hall where there would be limited interaction with our own campus community,” Abaray said.

Seeking Nominations for the Honor Council

Dear colleagues,

It’s that time of year again: we are seeking nominations for the Honor Council—and we are looking to replace more than half the Council, so we are REALLY seeking nominations for the Honor Council. If you know of a student or students who are intelligent, fair-minded, dependable, and compassionate, please send their names to me sometime before next Monday, April 20. I’m committed to ensuring that we have a diverse council that best represents the student body here at Lawrence, so I would ask you to consider that commitment as you make your nominations.

Any rising sophomore, junior, or senior who has not been found in violation of the Honor Code or Judicial Code is eligible for membership, and multiple nominations are welcome.  Again, to nominate a student for the Honor Council, please email their name to me by a week from today: Monday, April 20.

Thanks so much, friends,

Absentee Voting Information

Good afternoon students-

A few of you have reached out today with questions about requesting an absentee ballot if you are registered to vote in Wisconsin.  The deadline to request an absentee ballot was recently extended and closes at 5pm TODAY, April 3rd.

To request an absentee ballot for the April 7th election, the Appleton City Clerk’s office recommends that you directly email electionclerk@appleton.org to request your ballot.  You will need to tell the clerk’s office where you would like the ballot sent and will need to attach a copy of an appropriate form of voter ID to your email request.

A note on Voter IDs

Wisconsin law currently requires you to have a voter ID on election day in order to cast a ballot. A Wisconsin driver’s license, U.S. passport, or military ID is acceptable. Your standard Lawrence student ID does not meet the voter identification specifications.  If you have previously acquired a LU voter ID (this would look like you standard ID card but will have expirations dates on it) you can use this as your identification as long as it is not past the expiration dates.

Submit Clip for the Spring Term Welcome Back Video

Help us kick off Spring Term with a video reminder that Lawrence continues to be a community, even if we’re temporarily spread across the globe. Submit a short video message from your home workspace welcoming your fellow Lawrentians to Spring Term. Clips from faculty, staff, students, and alumni will be cut together to make one long welcome video. Submit your video by 11:59 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 1.

To submit the clip, you’ll have to log into your OneDrive account. Sign in with your shortened LU email address (last name+first initial @lawrence.edu) and your network password.

Instructions:

  1. If using a phone, film the video horizontally (tip your phone on the side instead of up-and-down). Feel free to use a webcam, as well.
  2. Start with a hello and your name
  3. Tell us where you are
  4. Follow with a short message to welcome everyone back and kick off Spring Term

Details:

  • Videos do not have to be highly produced. Selfie video on a cell phone or using a webcam is perfect.
  • Have fun with it. Don’t be afraid to be original and show your personality.
  • Keep the video clips short: 5-20 seconds is ideal, 1 minute maximum.
  • Your entire clip may not be included.

See an example video here: https://youtu.be/qAaAQIR8_hY

If you have issues accessing the submission form or uploading your video, email communications@lawrence.edu

Mail Services Update

Mail services will continue, but with changes and limitations. The mailroom is also sanitizing all packages upon receipt.

Faculty & Staff

Campus delivery to buildings will only happen once a day, usually between 8-10 a.m., to a pre-arranged location with each department to avoid close contact.

Students

Students remaining on campus

Students remaining on campus will still receive mail and packages. For package pick-up, students must arrange a time with the mailroom for a no-contact delivery. The mailroom can be reached at mail.services@lawrence.edu or 920-832-6657.

Students departing campus

Packages will no longer be accepted for departed students once spring term begins. Only students living on campus can pick up packages. Other mail will be forwarded to the student at the address they requested, or to the address we have on file if the University was not provided with specific instructions.

Information on Absentee voting for the Wisconsin Spring Election, April 7th

As many of you transition away from campus I am writing with information about how to engage with the April 7th Wisconsin Spring Election.  While this information is current as of today, please check back to the Voting and Voter Registration page as information may change in the coming days or weeks.

Request an Absentee Ballot

The Wisconsin Spring Election and Presidential Preference Primary is still planned for April 7. All Lawrentians who are eligible and have registered to vote are strongly encouraged to participate in this important form of civic and community engagement and can do so by requesting an absentee ballot.

To request an absentee ballot, go to the absentee ballot page of My Vote WI. You may be asked to upload a photo of your driver’s license or other voter ID.  We encourage you to request your ballot as soon as possible.

Voter ID

Wisconsin law currently requires you to have a voter ID on Election Day in order to cast a ballot, even for absentee voting. A Wisconsin driver’s license, U.S. passport, or military ID is acceptable. Your Lawrence student ID is not. If you do not have a Wisconsin driver’s license or a passport, you can obtain a Lawrence voter ID card from the ID Office at no charge. (For questions about an LU voter ID, send an email to idoffice@lawrence.edu).

What’s on the ballot?

In addition to the presidential primary, there are many important local races on the ballot.  These include:

  • Appleton mayor
  • Appleton city attorney
  • Appleton school board members
  • Appleton alderpersons
  • Outagamie County circuit court judges
  • Outagamie County supervisors
  • Wisconsin State Justice of the Supreme Court

You can find a list of preliminary candidates and helpful information on Lawrence’s Voting and Voter Registration page.

Take care and be well,

Curt
