Avoid Chapman Lot 8/2

Due to a high volume of visitors for our Summer Visit Day on August 2, we are asking staff to avoid parking in the Chapman Lot these days in order to provide the best possible experience for our guests.

The saw horses will be blocking the entrances and admissions staff members will be present to direct traffic. Thank you for your cooperation!

Campus Closed Monday – FAQ

Facility Services will be conducting maintenance on the University’s electrical transformers from Saturday, August 3, through Monday, August 5. Campus power will be shut down on Saturday, August 3, until power is restored during the day on Monday. As a result, the campus will be closed on Monday, August 5.

To help you prepare, here’s a quick FAQ regarding the outage and closure.

Is my building affected?

There will be no power to the following buildings:

Art Studios (behind Brokaw)
Briggs Hall
Brokaw Hall
Buchanan-Kiewit Wellness
Chapman Hall
Colman Hall
International House
Kohler Hall
Main Hall
Memorial Chapel
Memorial Hall
Mudd Library
Music Drama Center
Plantz Hall
Quads 1-6
Raymond House
Sabin House
Sage Hall
Sampson House
Trever Hall
Wriston Art Center
Youngchild Hall

Backup generators will be supporting critical technical and scientific equipment. No other power or generator support can be provided, and ALL refrigerators in these buildings must be emptied before the weekend.

Am I being paid for Monday’s closure?

YES. Employees will be paid for their full regularly scheduled hours that day. Employees paid on an hourly basis should enter their regularly scheduled hours into the Paid Time Off line on their timesheets. No timesheet adjustments are required for salaried employees.

Please note that student employees who are regularly scheduled to work on Monday will not be paid for the hours missed.

How should I prepare for Monday’s closure?

Before leaving the office on Friday, all refrigerators (and freezers!) should be emptied of their contents. Please make sure all window unit air conditioners are turned off and power down all computers and electronic devices completely.

Surely there’s something else to share?

There is! During the outage, a minor renovation of the first floor carpeted areas in Brokaw will occur. HR and Payroll will be in the ITC in the Mudd Library on Tuesday, August 6, and the Title IX office will be available via email.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Summer Exhibition in the Wriston Art Galleries

Artist & Collector: La Vera Pohl

Open Friday, July 12 – Sunday, August 18

Art @ Noon Tours Thursdays July 18 & August 15

La Vera Pohl was a Milwaukee art historian, artist, and collector who studied in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s. She collected around 220 prints, paintings, and drawings by early 20th-century German artists at a time when most Americans were unaware of modern German art. This exhibition will feature highlights from Lawrence University’s Pohl Collection of German Expressionism as well as some of Pohl’s own paintings and papers.

The Wriston Summer Exhibitions are an annual series in the Wriston Art Galleries intended to engage the Fox Valley community in a conversation about artworks and artists of the Midwest.

QPR Suicide Prevention Training on Campus in July

Want to Learn How to Save a Life?

In just 90 minutes, you can learn the essential steps (Question Persuade, and Refer) to help individuals who might be at risk for suicide or other mental health issues.  QPR is an internationally recognized “best practice” designed to provide suicide prevention training and education to Lawrence University faculty, staff, and students. After taking this training participants will:

• Know what behaviors/warning signs indicate that someone might be at risk for suicide
• Be able to effectively communicate with someone who might be thinking about suicide
• Know how and when to refer students to Counseling Services and employees to community mental health professionals
• Learn about local and national resources for suicide prevention

There are currently two upcoming opportunities for QPR training on our campus:

Tuesday, July 16th from 10:00-11:30am

Wednesday, July 31st from 9:30-11:00am

Both sessions will take place in the Kraemer Conference Room (Warch Campus Center 308), right next to the Info Desk.

Please register here if you wish to attend: https://www.lawrence.edu/students/wellness/counseling/qpr-sign-up/node/24363

If you’ve participated in QPR training in the past, feel free to attend again as a refresher.

Art Around Campus this Summer

This summer the Wriston Art Galleries intern will be conducting an inventory of artworks around campus – he may poke his head into your office, but just to make sure things are where we think they are.

Also: if you ever find yourself with artwork that you no longer want or need in your campus work spaces, send Beth Zinsli or Elizabeth Larew a note and we’ll come retrieve it – we are always happy to take care of art, and someone else may want it for their office. We can also store artwork safely during periods of construction or remodeling.

If you need a little more art in your life, the Senior Art Show is open through June 30, and the summer show, featuring our collection of German Expressionist prints, will be on view July 14-August 18.

There are two Art @ Noon opportunities, too: Thursdays, July 18 and August 15. Join us for a fun 20-minute tour of the galleries over your lunch break!
