Resident Artists Workshop

Resident Artists are dancers, makers, mothers, performers, teachers, and friends who build community and creative collaboration. With experience in varied areas, including post-modern dance, Mohiniyatttam, Horton Technique, Ensemble Thinking, dance theatre, film, and in companies such as Bill T. Jones, Ailey II, and their own companies, these five artists come together to practice valuing movement, joy, and each other. Resident Artists are Dahlia NayarLanette Costas-Stampley, Margaret Sunghe PaekRoz LeBlanc, and Tami Stronach.

Indigenous People’s Day Celebration

The 6th annual Indigenous People’s Day Celebration will take place on Monday October 11, 2021, at 5:30-6:30pm on Main Hall Green/Kaeyes Mamaceqtawuk Plaza (near the Mudd library).

All are invited to learn about the meaning behind the new Otachiah (Crane) 2021 art sculpture created by Oneida architecture professor Chris Cornelius and the historical context behind the Menominee words “Kaeyes Mamaceqtawuk.” 

A blessing of our new plaza will be given in the Menominee language by elder Dennis Kenote of the Menominee Nation.

A pow-wow demonstration by drummers, singers, and dancers from the Oneida Nation will be in attendance.

Traditional Indigenous food will be served. 

This collaborative healing outdoor event is free and open to the public. Please join us – all are welcome!

Jordan Fund Visiting Artist: Gina Adams

Studio Art has an upcoming Jordan Fund Visiting Artist, Gina Adams.

Adams will be giving an artist talk on Tuesday, October 12th from 4:30-5:30 pm in the Wriston Auditorium.

On Wednesday, October 13th, there will be an art event in the Wriston Lobby from 9am-Noon and from 2pm-4pm. Students can take part in cutting letters and helping create one of Adams’ Broken Treaty pieces on the windows in Wriston. It is open to the LU community so please come on by!

Tuition Benefit Programs

If you have a dependent applying to start college for the 2022-23 academic year, this message is for you! 

If you will be applying to any (or all!) of the tuition benefit programs Lawrence offers to dependents of employees, now is the time to start the tuition benefit application process.  Please see information about LU Tuition Remission, ACM Tuition Remission, and the National Tuition Exchange on the LU Financial Aid office’s website (https://www.lawrence.edu/info/offices/financial-aid/tuition_benefits).  We strongly recommend new tuition benefit applications be submitted by December 1. 

If you have a dependent attending college on either the ACM Tuition Remission or National Tuition Exchange programs for 2021-22 who will be a continuing student next year, the LU Financial Aid office will be in contact with you directly in December regarding the process to recertify the benefit for 2022-23.

Come to the President’s Tailgate on Saturday

Join President Laurie Carter at the President’s Tailgate ahead of the football and volleyball games on Saturday, October 2 at the Banta Bowl.

The tailgate runs 11:30-1PM and the first 300 students (with LU ID) will receive a free t-shirt and pizza. Play games and enjoy music by the Mariachi Ensemble while supporting our Vikings!

Ride the shuttle from the turnaround on Lawe Street (behind Wriston) to the Banta Bowl starting at 11:30 and ride back to campus after the game.

Masks are required in the shuttle, at the tailgate event, and at the volleyball game.

Current and upcoming campus construction projects

  1. Kohler Hall: The Phase I renovation is still underway.  On Friday, September 24th, from 9am-11am, there will be a crane lifting a large fan to the roof of Kohler Hall. Everyone will need to be out of Kohler Hall during this time.
    1. Half of the parking lot will be coned off for the delivery of the crane, which will be arriving around 8:30am and departing by noon. We ask that everyone avoid this area during this crane lift, for safety reasons.
    1. Phase II will encompass the lower level and remainder of the windows over the summer of 2022.
  2. Johnson Controls: Campus-wide lighting upgrade and science building fume hood upgrades in progress.
  3. Briggs Hall Greenhouse: Hot water pipe replacement is in progress.
  4. Brokaw Hall: New ramp expected to be completed in November.
  5. Hiett Hall: Repairs to a broken sewer line. 
  6. Hillside Boardwalk between Hiett Hall and Briggs Hall: Removal of the boardwalk has begun and expected to be removed by late October.

LU Food Pantry is Temporarily Closed for Relocation

The LU food pantry is temporarily closed so that we can manage the relocation process.  Please do NOT leave donations at the Esch Hurvis Center for Spiritual and Religious Life as we are in the process of relocating the pantry to a more accessible location.  The pantry will be coordinated by some new folks in its new location.  Watch for updates here.

Crane Lift over Kohler Hall – September 24, 2021 at 9AM

Dear Lawrence Community,

I write to solicit your nominations for the 2022-2023  Lawrence Convocation Series and the 2023 Commencement Ceremony. Over the years the Convocation Series has featured a wide range of distinguished speakers, including writers, artists, activists, scientists, scholars, and journalists. TheCommencement Speaker customarily receives an honorary degree from Lawrence in recognition of their accomplishments.

Please email me (allison.m.fleshman@lawrence.edu) the names of people you would like to see deliver a Convocation and/or receive an honorary degree at Commencement. Any additional information you would like to include about them will also be appreciated.
