Community Conversations: Food Sovereignty: Revitalizing Ancestral Foods and Knowledgeways in Indigenous Communities

The Office of Diversity, Equity and inclusion presents the 2022-2023 DE&I Community Conversations Series: Race, Racism and Justice. The fourth talk in the series will cover how Indigenous people around the world are revitalizing ancestral foods and knowledge, ways to promote healthy eating, robust local economies, and more resilient communities.

Described as “the most dynamic duo of this generation” (San Francisco Classical Voice), “rock stars of the classical music world” (Miami Herald), and “the very model of complete 21st-century musicians” (The Washington Post), the Anderson & Roe Piano Duo aims to make classical music a relevant and powerful force around the world.

Their five critically acclaimed albums have spent dozens of weeks at the top of the Billboard Classical Charts, while their Emmy-nominated, self-produced music videos have been viewed by millions on YouTube and at international film festivals. 

2022 marks the 20th anniversary of Anderson & Roe’s debut. Since forming their dynamic musical partnership as students at The Juilliard School, Anderson & Roe have toured extensively worldwide as recitalists and orchestral soloists; appeared on NPR, MTV, PBS, and the BBC; presented at numerous international leader symposiums; and served as hosts of “From the Top” and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Mindfulness in Nature Retreat

Spirit Space and Wellness Services are collaborating to host a retreat during mid-term reading period. This full-day retreat will take you to the shores of Lake Michigan where you will be led through meditation, movement and reflection sessions and also have solo time to spend in nature.

April 20 – Dr. Tommy Curry Talk
WCC Cinema – 7-8:30 p.m.
Tommy J. Curry is a Professor of Philosophy and holds the Personal Chair of African Philosophy and Black Male Studies at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests are 19th century ethnology, Critical Race Theory, and Black Male Studies. He is the author of The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, and the Dilemmas of Black Manhood.

April 25 – Bystander Training

Learn how to be an active bystander. The training teaches how bystanders can interrupt harm-doing and generate positive actions by others through education and empowerment.

April 27 – This Anti Trans Moment – Resisting the Right and the Center: Paisley Currah Talk
Wriston Auditorium – 5-7 p.m.
Paisley Currah is a Professor of Political Science and Women’s & Gender Studies at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of CUNY. Currah has written widely on transgender issues. He is the the co-founder of the leading journal in transgender studies, Transgender Studies Quarterly. Currah’s book, Sex Is as Sex Does: Governing Transgender Identity, was published in May 2022. Currah has advocated for transgender rights at all levels of government. He was a founding board member of the Transgender Law and Policy Institute, served on the founding board of directors of Global Action for Trans Equality, and sat on the advisory board of Human Rights Watch’s LGBT Program.

If you need help or support related to experiencing sexual assault or another form of gender-based misconduct, you can find a full list on our on and off-campus resources for private and confidential resources on the Lawrence website.

You can report instances of sexual assault as well as any other form of gender-based misconduct to the Title IX Office. The reports are received by the Title IX Coordinator. When the report is received, the coordinator will follow up with you.

Márton Galambos to present at the next installment of the Povolny Lecture Series

The 2022-23 Povolny Lecture Series in International Studies continues Tuesday, April 11 with a lecture from Márton Galambos, the editor-in-chief of Forbes Hungary. His talk will be on the topic “Politics and the Press in Hungary: Birth of an Autocrat.”

This lecture is free and open to the public.

About Márton

Márton Galambos completed a degree in sociology in Hungary and also holds a B.A. in Business Administration and Communication from McDaniel College (MD). He spent a year at the Freie Universitaet Berlin as a Fellow at the European Journalism-Fellowships program. Márton worked at various Hungarian news outlets and periodicals for 10 years before joining Forbes Hungary.

Business and Entrepreneurship Major Information Session

Are you interested in learning more about the new Business and Entrepreneurship (BUEN) major? Come join faculty and fellow business-interested students for an info session on Wednesday, April 5, 12:40-1:30 p.m., in Steitz 202.

This session will help you learn about the major requirements, how to declare, advising in the major, and more. Students can now officially declare the BUEN major via the Major Declaration form.

Athletics Crowdfund is back!

The Crowdfund for LU Vikings Athletics is back! All 22 of our NCAA Division III sports teams are banding together again this year to raise funds to provide our student-athletes with state-of-the-art training equipment and technology.

Your support of this year’s crowdfund will impact every single current student-athlete and help us recruit the next generation of Vikings.
