In Memoriam: Joseph Hopfensperger ’52

Dear Lawrence Family,

I wish to share with you the news that Joseph Allen Hopfensperger ‘52 passed away on July 12.  Joe was a long-time contributor to Lawrence and to the Appleton community. In his many years of connection with Lawrence, Joe served as director of industrial placement, director of the radio station, professor of theatre and drama, administrative assistant to the president, resident director of Björklunden, honorary degree recipient, convocation lecturer and more. Joe’s obituary can be found here—it shares more details about his extraordinary life, which has so enriched our collective life.

Over the more than 70 years of Joe’s connection with Lawrence, many have arrived and scattered to places across the globe. Yet having touched, our lives are linked together. Lawrence University is committed to sharing our losses and celebrating our connections in many ways. Funeral information for those who are in the area can be found here.

With deep gratitude for the life of Joseph Allen Hopfensperger,
Linda

Reverend Linda J. Morgan-Clement, DMin.

New External Email Communications System Coming

After a thorough review of alternative external email providers, the offices of communications and technology services have identified a new provider. Effective August 1, we will no longer send non-campus email through Informz. Instead, we will begin using MailChimp for external communications (Alumni, Development, etc.)  Please note, we will continue to use Outlook as our internal campus email provider.

MailChimp was selected for several reasons – most notably due to their user-friendly templates, ability to integrate with Banner as well as cost savings vs Informz.

All department email administrators and their department heads should plan to attend one of two or three alternative training sessions, led by Director of Digital Communications, Lauren Erlandson. Administrators will learn the nuts and bolts of the new system. Department heads will also benefit, since Lauren will discuss best practices, analytics reports, compliance with CAN-SPAM laws, LU’s email policies, etc.

Lauren will share training dates with current Informz administrators and department heads. However, individuals who would like to learn more about email in general and MailChimp in particular, should contact Lauren (x6746) to make sure they are aware of training dates.

Email has become one of our most important communication channels and will continue to play an important role in reaching our various audiences. Using it properly can make a big difference in whether your email is read or deleted.

Associate Vice President of Communications

Employee Resource Group – People of Color UPDATE!

Thank you to those who were able to make the first set of meetings for the People of Color Employee Resource Group on April 11.  It was a nice time for folks to get together and begin to map out what shape the group will take.  We captured our audience through Banner self-identification as a person of color.  If you were not initially invited and would like to be involved, please send Christyn Abaray, christyn.abaray@lawrence.edu, your contact information – name and email address.  It will be maintained privately with the list of those interested in the Resource Group and shared nowhere else.  Our plan is to connect again prior to the summer so send your information to Christyn by end of day Monday, May 22.

Thank you,
Christyn Abaray, Linda Morgan-Clemente, Carla Daughtry

Main Hall Flag Pole

The rigging for the flag pole above Main Hall was damaged in the high winds of a couple of weeks ago. It is a complicated repair process given the fact that the pulley for the line is mounted atop a pole that stands 17 feet above the roof of the cupola! Facility Services is aware of the issue and is working on a solution. The flag will be back up as soon as repairs are completed.
