Professional Development Subcommittee: (Re)Introduction

The Professional Development Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the President’s Committee on Diversity Affairs, and its purpose is to promote and maximize a variety of professional and personal opportunities related to diversity and inclusion in order to improve cultural competency across our campus community of students, staff, and faculty.

The 2020-21 committee members include Karen Brennan (Spiritual and Religious Life), Ed Berthiaume (Communications), Cassie Curry (Planned Giving), Joanna Morey (Center for Academic Success), and Rose Theisen (Research Administration).

The committee shares the University’s commitment to transformation and to become a community dedicated to the active work of antiracism. As part of this commitment, we are improving our communication about professional development opportunities related to diversity and inclusion activities for University employees. Please watch for updates, reminders, and invitations to participate from the Professional Development Subcommittee in future LU Insiders.

The Professional Development Subcommittee is looking for additional staff and faculty to join the committee. Please contact Joanna Morey (joanna.morey@lawrence.edu) if you are interested in joining the committee.

Reminder about Books for Courses

Dear Lawrentian,

I’m writing with a reminder about ordering books for your courses.

As you know, when you log into the Lawrence Online Bookstore  (go.lawrence.edu/textbook), you’ll see a page with the courses you’re registered for and the materials they require. There may be notes telling you which versions or editions are suitable. And there will be options—new, used, marketplace, etc.—for adding items to your cart, checking out, and having your books shipped to your SPC code at the Lawrence mailroom for pick-up.

We want you to have all the materials you need so you are ready to succeed. If you’re not able to use a personal credit card to buy books, you can arrange to have them charged to your student account with payment due in 30 days. Contact the Financial Aid office at financial.aid@lawrence.edu and request a book voucher with your name, LU ID, and estimated cost (e.g., Pat Smith, L01991111, $300). The voucher will be added to your account within 48 hours, and you’ll receive an email from Akademos with instructions for how to use the voucher to purchase books.  Your account will be charged the actual book costs, not the full value of the voucher.

I wish you the best of success in your studies this term and look forward to seeing you on campus!

Sincerely,

Peter Blitstein

Staff and Faculty Invite to Stay at Bjorklunden

Greetings!

Hope this finds you and yours all well and happy!

Good News! We are going to continue outside rentals from January through March, 2021. Folks who are visiting are couples or families that have been ‘weathering this storm’ together. : )

Though the lodge remains closed – we have been renting the two outbuildings – Studio and Stabbur – as well as the Staff Quarters (located in a sequestered wing of the lodge). Due to COVID – we’re doing things a little differently. Folks are bringing their own food and linen. They are cleaning and sanitizing before departure. And they are leaving a donation to cover their stay.

If this sounds like something you’d like to do (or do again!) send me a couple date ranges along with your building preference (if you have one) and we’ll go from there. We’ll be booking on a first come first served basis.

Be safe. Be healthy. Be of good cheer! k. : )

Rave Guardian Safety App

I want to draw your attention to a special resource that we are launching this term to strengthen our sense of safety on campus and in the wider community. We know that a sense of safety is important for a community of scholars and we continue to identify and implement ways in which we can protect our community and ourselves.  To these ends, we are excited to launch a new safety app for the Lawrence community: The Rave Guardian App

Among other things, the Rave Guardian App allows persons to connect with Campus Safety and access a variety of campus safety resources. Importantly too, it allows you to establish a network of “guardians’ who may accompany you virtually when you move about campus or in the community.  You choose your guardians and your location is known only to your guardians during a time frame (safety timer) that you set.

I encourage and invite you to download the free Rave Guardian App on your mobile device today and familiarize yourself with its functions, capabilities and resources.  Information on downloading and installing the app may be found here.

Many persons worked over the course of several months to bring this important resource to our campus. I want to thank Dean Brittany Bell, along with colleagues in the Information Technology and Communication departments, for their leadership in this venture. We are also grateful to the various students and staff who took the time to review the app and provide valuable feedback.

Your support and use of this safety app is appreciated and I know you will find this to be a useful resource.  Best wishes for a safe and productive term!

Sincerely,

Christopher D. Card

United Way: Live United

Dear Staff and Faculty,

At Lawrence University we are committed to supporting our community through the work we do and the resources we share.

We know these times are difficult and challenging for everyone, especially now.  That is why I am asking you to take part in this year’s United Way Fox Cities employee giving campaign LIVE UNITED, but also understand if you are unable to do so.

United Way Fox Cities is grateful to the many Lawrence University employees who have generously contributed in the past. Your generosity has made a real and lasting difference to individuals and families right here in our own local community. They support basic needs to those who need them most.

Please watch the 2-minute campaign video. It is sure to leave you feeling good about the impact we can make off-campus.

If you didn’t give last year and give $26 this year ($1/per paycheck) you will be entered into a drawing for a Chevy Trailblazer! Donors who gave last year need to increase their total gift by $1 to qualify. Gifts of any size are always welcome.

Please email Stacy Mara with the amount you would like to donate per payroll period by Dec. 1. New pledges will begin Dec. 11 and run for 26 payrolls. You may also campus mail a check made out to United Way to Stacy Mara in Wilson House.

If you can, I invite you to join me in supporting United Way Fox Cities to inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow. As we give, advocate, or volunteer, we’ll increase our own sense of community.

Thank you for considering this opportunity as a way to support our local community and to LIVE UNITED.

Room Reservation Reminders

Are you looking to reserve a room for an activity, a small group gathering, or for studying?

Due to COVID 19 safety and health protocols, staff need the Room Reservation to be submitted at least 2 business days in advance in order to ensure the room can be ready and opened properly for when it is needed.

Please remember that most rooms, regardless of size, are limited to a capacity of 8-10 people, with some smaller rooms only allowing for 1 or 2 people. Capacities are posted at the physical location, so please be sure to check the capacity prior to putting in a reservation to ensure it will suite your needs as the reservation system is unable to change to reflect COVID-19 capacities. Most rooms/spaces will have cleaning supplies left in the space for you to wipe hard surfaces down (tables, chairs, etc) after your event or study group session.

Room Reservation System Link: https://bannerweb.lawrence.edu/pls/lu_apex/f?p=107:101:34345379361868::::: – Be sure to check off that you need the room unlocked and locked to ensure staff will be able to open the space for you.

Questions? Please reach out to coronainfo@lawrence.edu for general info or student.activities@lawrence.edu for info about event spaces in Warch Campus Center.

Dear Lawrence Community,

Tomorrow, November 3, is the long-anticipated general election. While much of the campaign season has focused on the presidential race, there are many important races on the ballot. I know that many of you may have already registered and voted early or by absentee ballot, and I thank you for your participation in this important civic duty. I write today with final reminders about Election Day and options to register and vote.
