Immigration Update on Presidential Proclamation 9983 known as “Expanded Travel Ban”

On January 31, 2020, Proclamation 9983 expanded the existing Travel Ban initiated by President Trump’s Executive Order 13780 and subsequent Proclamation 9645 in September 2017.  This new proclamation places immigrant visa and entry restrictions on six additional countries effective February 21, 2020: Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania.  International students are considered non-immigrant visa types, and therefore not considered “restricted” by the new ban.  The countries affected by the previous travel ban, which remain in effect, and in many cases do include both immigrant and non-immigrant visa categories, are Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia.

International students (F-1/J-1 visas), students with global backgrounds, and any Lawrence student who may be impacted by the recent or previous proclamations or the health-related travel restrictions to/from China, (referenced by Vice President Card in the email sent on February 5,)  are encouraged to consult with Leah McSorley, Associate Dean of Students for International Student Services, prior to planning any travel outside of the United States.  Additionally, free consultations provided by a local immigration attorney are available on February 14, 2020 and can be scheduled by contacting internationalhouse@lawrence.edu.

All students are encouraged to understand their constitutional rights while residing inside the United States.  The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) will be providing and educational presentation about the rights afforded by the U.S. constitution on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at 4:30 p.m. in the Cinema.  This event, sponsored by the Diversity and Intercultural Center and International Student Services, is free and open to the public.

Lawrence University is committed to serving students of all backgrounds from around the world.  Lawrence does not discriminate based on citizenship status nor country of origin and is committed to providing an equitable education experience for all students. Our campus welcomes students with global backgrounds including those raised in the United States.  Over 230 students representing 53 countries are members of the Lawrence community and we continue to value their presence and contributions to campus.

Experiential Learning Funding Applications are online now!

The Center for Career, Life, and Community Engagement’s experiential learning funds help support students’ summer internships, service, and volunteerism. For students interested in opportunities with small presses, large research labs, professional orchestras, global NGOs, and much more, these funds can alleviate barriers related to living costs and travel.  That means students will be able to pursue projects that matter to them in intentional, supported ways. Applications opened on January 1.  They are available online now. The deadline to apply is April 3. Please share this opportunity widely with students, and encourage them to meet with Career Advisors in the CLC if they have questions. We can’t wait to see the projects, service, volunteerism, and internships that this year’s recipients take on!

MLK Day at Lawrence University

What does MLK Jr Day mean at Lawrence?

MLK, Jr. Day of Service at Lawrence University is an annual event that invites the entire Lawrence community to continue honoring the ideas of Dr. King and the civil rights movements that continue to this day.  Students, staff and faculty will honor the continuance of the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr through learning, serving, and celebrating.

As a part of the Lawrence community, many staff and faculty interact with students in one specific way. Participating in this day will give staff and faculty an opportunity to interact with students in new capacities and get to know them in a setting outside of the classroom or workplace. Volunteering on MLK Jr. Day provides an opportunity for you to:

  • Give something back to an organization that has improved our community
  • Make a difference to the lives of others (including our students!)
  • Address disparities of access to basic human rights
  • Step away from work to think about your own commitment to civic engagement

Six teach-ins throughout campus will address anti-racism 101, advancing racial equity in programming, creativity at the heart of inclusive community, black + trans: intersectional violence, anti-racist strategies and solutions, and stigma and disparity within mental health treatment.

Five service projects will bring you off campus to support elder advocacy, access to education, sustainability/hunger, animal welfare, and job training/employment. Each service project is a student-led initiative that benefits the community and helps Lawrentians solidify the value of learning as you serve. Select from a number of options, any of which will benefit a variety of agencies in the Appleton area.

Learn more and register at go.lawrence.edu/MLK2020.

Dr. King sacrificed everything to strive for equity. Who will do the work on this national day of service? All are welcome. Special thanks to the LUCC Committee on Diversity Affairs (CODA) and the LUCC Committee on Community Service and Engagement (CCSE) for their planning and financial support of this program.
