Office of Communications to return to Alumni and Development Division

As we anticipate the change in leadership in Communications with Megan Scott’s upcoming departure, the decision has been made to return Communications to the Alumni and Development division as of Sept. 1, reports Cal Husmann, Senior Vice President for Alumni and Development.

As shared previously, Kelly Landis will serve as interim associate vice president for communications, leading the Communications team and continuing her good work overseeing the brand elevation component of the strategic initiatives. Communications will continue to support the marketing and communications needs of the entire university.

Communications will report directly to Husmann until a new vice president is hired. The VP will then oversee the Alumni, Development, and Communications divisions.

“It’s expected that the joining of our three teams in Brokaw Hall under a new vice president will create greater synergy within our division,” Husmann said.

LU Insider July Publication Schedule

The LU Insider will be published twice during the month of July–Thursday, July 7, and Thursday, July 21.

Please continue to submit posts to the LU Insider blog throughout the month. Communications will publish the posts as they are received, and the posts will appear on MyLU. Posts will also be shared in the two editions of the newsletter noted above.

Please email communications@lawrence.edu if you have any questions, and continue to follow campus events online.

Sole Burner 5K to take place near campus on Saturday

A reminder that the annual Sole Burner walk/run will be held on the morning of Saturday, May 7. The event begins and ends at City Park and will affect parking near the Lawrence University campus. A note from Sole Burner organizers:

SOLE BURNER SATURDAY MORNING, MAY 7th

This year’s 40h annual American Cancer Society Sole Burner 5K walk/run will be taking place on Saturday morning, May 7th at City Park. We will be using our “traditional” course utilizing the College Avenue Bridge. Streets on the route will likely be blocked off starting at around 8:55. a.m. Walkers and runners will start out from City Park at 9:00 a.m. and it is our expectation that all walkers will be past the bridge by 9:40. Streets on the route will likely open before that time when the last walker goes by. Note that streets directly around City Park will be blocked off earlier.

For those of you in the Lawrence area south of College, it is a bit deceiving since Lawe Street is open and there is access to Lawe Street from Alton Street, but E. South River will be closed until about 9:50. Listed below are expected closed times.

  1. 1)  College Avenue Bridge – 8:50 until 9:40 (eastbound is open to Rankin)
  2. 2)  Lawe/E. South River – 9:00 until 9:50
  3. 3)  Lawe/Franklin – 8:55 until 9:20 (after opening, you can take Lawe north out of downtown)
  4. 4)  E. South Island/Olde Oneida and Eagle Flats Parkway/Olde Oneida – 8:55 until 10:10
  5. 5)  College/Drew – 8:55 until 10:20, you may be allowed west via College until about 9:10
  6. 6)  Washington/Drew – you may be allowed west via Washington until about 9:10.
  7. 7)  Newberry Trail is open off Lawe Street to the Telulah park area

Thus, you can get through west on College or Washington until about 9:10 and north on Lawe by about 9:20 there is only about a 10-15 minute window of no way out of the downtown area, except for emergencies.

We realize that this will be an inconvenience to you and hope this notice will help with your morning planning. If you are home, we’d love to have you come out and cheer on the participants as we attempt to raise over $200,000 to fight cancer. Thank you.

Can’t beat us? Join Us! As a thank you for your support, please use the discount code 22NEIGHBOR to get $5.00 off your registration fee when you register for the Sole Burner 5K Walk/Run at www.soleburner.org.

Thank you for your support!

The Lawrence community is invited to the May 13 inauguration of President Laurie Carter in Memorial Chapel and a May 14 community celebration that will be highlighted by a Brighter Together Picnic on Main Hall Green.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to register for the inauguration ceremony. The light-filled celebration will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13. Inauguration ceremony tickets require advanced registration. The ceremony also will be livestreamed at go.lawrence.edu/inauguration.

A day of celebratory events will follow on Saturday, May 14, marking both this historic inauguration and the 175th anniversary since Lawrence’s founding in 1847. The festivities include a Brighter Together Picnic on Main Hall Green from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (followed by a closing ceremony), featuring food, live music, games, other entertainment, and a community resource fair with area nonprofits that have been partners with Lawrence through the years. Our neighbors in Appleton and the greater Fox Cities are being invited to gather with the Lawrence community on campus. The day also includes various exhibits, productions, and student, faculty, and alumni presentations. Details of the day’s events can be found on the inauguration page at lawerence.edu.

The May 13-14 weekend will be one of the signature events of the year-long 175th celebration.

We hope you’ll join your fellow Lawrentians for this historic and celebratory weekend.

About the New Website

A rebuild of the www.lawrence.edu website has been underway for 2.5 years and Lawrence staff from the ITS and Communications offices have dedicated themselves to designing, building, writing, and creating this new website.

Goals for the project include:

  • Encourage prospective students to apply and enroll.
  • Encourage alumni, parents, and friends to support Lawrence.
  • Make daily operations for faculty, staff and current students easier.
  • Inform the local community about operations and events.
  • Inform and delight prospective employees.

Due to pandemic delays, the website will be launched in two phases. Phase one will launch in March 2022 and will include major sections of the site that serve external audiences such as prospective students and families, alumni, and community members. Phase one will also include the introduction of MyLU, a customizable landing page for students, faculty, and staff with quick links to many of the pages and forms we need on a regular basis.

Phase two will include several offices and services such as the Registrar, the Office of Residential Education & Housing, International Student Services, etc. that will be moved over to the new site in the coming months. Until those sections of the site are built on the new site, they will be accessible via the current website.

For the last few months, the new website has been under review by staff, faculty, and a selection of current students to ensure it’s ready for launch. Much of the collected feedback has been implemented and we will continue to implement feedback even after the site is launched.

Learn more about the new website and get answers to your questions by attending one of the two presentations next Tuesday!

New Lawrence.edu Website Coming Soon

Later this month, Lawrence will be launching a brand new Lawrence.edu website. Here are a few things you should know:

  • MyLU: a new landing page just for students, faculty, and staff will be part of the new site. Here you’ll find quick links to the resources you use most as well as Lawrence news and events.
  • Beta testing: faculty, staff, and a selection of students are currently reviewing the website and offering feedback to help get the site ready for launch.
  • Goals of the site: the new website is meant to be a better tool for prospective students to understand what they can study and expect at Lawrence. At the same time, we are working hard to make the site a better tool for our current students, faculty, and staff to find what they’re looking for easily.
  • New look, new feel: the new site reflects a new, modern design and has been built to be more accessible and inclusive than our current website.

Stay tuned for the new website at the beginning of Spring Term and email communications@lawrence.edu with any questions.
