2018 Ecolympics

For one week this term the Sustainability Steering Committee is challenging each of the major residence halls to reduce their energy usage by 15%. The building with the greatest energy savings will be entitled to bragging rights and a catered social in their honor.

Who has been challenged? Trever, Plantz, Kohler, Colman, Sage, Ormsby, and Hiett Halls.
When will the challenge take place? Sunday, November 4th – Saturday, November 9th.
How will we know who is winning? Every day, starting Monday, November 5th through Sunday, November 10th, students will receive an update on the competition standings via updates to building Facebook pages. Standings will also be published to the digital display boards around campus.

*Due to challenges with the metering system and renovations that will be occurring in Brokaw Hall, we are unable to include Brokaw in the Ecolympics this year. We also unable to include small houses due to constraints in the metering system. We are optimistic that Brokaw and small houses will be able to participate in future energy competitions!

Community Conversation on Emotional Wellbeing

You may be aware that the Task Force on Emotional Wellbeing began its work last term to examine those factors which give rise to stress and anxiety in our community.  The Task Force also aims to identify strategies to combat these factors and improve emotional wellness.  Provost Katie Kodat and I are co-chairs of the task force.

You are invited to join Provost Kodat and me in a community conversation this coming Friday from 4pm – 5pm in the Warch cinema.  We will give updates on the Task Force’s work to date and engage the community in a broad conversation on the state of emotional wellbeing on campus. This is the first in a series of conversations.  Please join us to discuss this very important campus issue.

Regards,
Chris Card
Vice President for Student Life

A new chapter for Pa Lee Moua

Dear Lawrence Community-

I am writing to share news about an upcoming staff transition in the Diversity Center and the Student Life Division. As some of you may already be aware, Pa Lee Moua will be leaving her role as Associate Dean of Students for Diversity in late summer. Today I write to share this news and to thank her for the authenticity and dedication she has brought with her every time she has set foot on campus.

After nearly 10 years at Lawrence University, the time has come for a new chapter in her professional life. In the fall, Pa Lee will join the Appleton Area School District as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. In this position, she will work to evaluate, examine, and change inequitable practices and procedures to ensure an inclusive learning environment for all students in the school district. Pa Lee will also provide comprehensive training and culturally responsive practices for all staff members. Additionally, she will serve as an administrator, advisor, bridge builder, strategic leader and community partner.

As many have experienced firsthand, Pa Lee has been a strong supporter of the Lawrence community. During her tenure Pa Lee has not only led the Diversity Center and related programming, but also spent numerous years as co-chair of the community-wide Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, served as Lawrence’s Posse liaison, participated for multiple terms on the President’s Committee on Diversity Affairs, and provided guidance and support to many Lawrentians.

In the coming weeks, we will begin a search for a position that will continue to lead the Diversity Center, enhance our work of becoming a more inclusive and equitable Lawrence, and to champion students during their time on campus.

Please join me in congratulating Pa Lee on her new role and thanking her for her dedication to the Lawrence Community!

Warm regards,

Curt
